Warm Weather Tips for You and Your Long (reptiles) Haired Cat
By Chris Jensen
No, cats don’t like water, so rule number one - don’t strap a life jacket on the cat and set it afloat in the pool, it’s just going to make the cat mad! My beautiful long haired boy cat can become very lethargic when the temperature goes way up. His sister, an American short hair does not seem to mind as much, but she also becomes a bit quieter when the mercury passes ninety degrees.
My boy is a Norwegian Forrest Cat and he is definitely designed for cold weather. He has a lot of thick fur that forms an undercoat for his long fur, and that provides insulation against the warm as well as against the cold. So rule number two- don’t try to shave the cat. It doesn’t help them at all and it could end in serious injury for you! Any creature can suffer from dehydration. In warm weather cats need to drink more water than normal, just like us humans.
However, cats can be very fussy about their water supply. Cats like their water to be in the same spot, just where they like it. Cats tend to prefer water that is running and like to drink out of faucets, although I don’t recommend it for them. What works better is a running fountain water bowl, available at almost any store that sells pet supplies. Make sure to change the water daily and clean the fountain once a week. To do this you have to take it apart, but hey, it’s worth the trouble, you do love your cat right?
Another tip about water for the cats- they don’t like odd or unknown things floating in the water, so rule number three- don’t put ice cubes in the cat bowl, they just think there is something that does not belong in the water, and they won’t drink at all!
Last but not least, provide a cool floor for the long haired cat to flop down on. If you have a tile entry or kitchen or maybe even bath, take the rugs up so there is a nice cool floor for the cat to enjoy. It’s really the best place for a long haired cat in the heat of summer. They can stretch out with belly to the floor and enjoy that cool feeling.
If it’s really hot, you can just sprawl out down there with them, but, rule number four- do not, I repeat do not wake them while they are napping! If you do, they are just going to get up and go find a spot away from you and it might not be so cool there!

Having a Sense of Humor About my Dogs Training Helps, A Lot
By Jeff Austin
Trust me when I tell you there are two things you must remember when you are training your dog, these are:
*Patience, never get in a hurry when you are training your dog, I guarantee he will pick up on your anxiety and wont learn a thing.
*Keep your sense of humor in tact; it will really come in handy during those unexpected training blurbs!
What exactly is a training blurb? Well lets see, its the time when you are teaching your dog to fetch a ball and he brings back the neighbors gardening gloves, with your neighbor still in them.
Or housebreaking him and you believe it has been successful, until you walk into the laundry room and realize that he has learned to hide his mistakes, in the laundry pile. These are training blurbs, and you must maintain a sense of humor about them.
You just continue with whatever lesson you are working on, or go back to the one he didnt really learn the first time, like being housebroken.
Never loose your temper with him when he makes a mistake, it just reinforces the bad behavior, and he will pick up on the anger and frustration you are feeling. If you get mad and chase him, he probably thinks you are playing.
If you take away something he has chewed and give him a rawhide chew, he has learned that by chewing up your favorite shoe, he can get a treat.
Dogs are much smarter than most people give them credit for, and like children they are very literal, we need to be aware of this when we are training them, and keep a sense of humor and patience all the time, even during the worst of training blurbs.

Essential Considerations For Potential Pet Owners
By Rachael Wood
Whether your new pet will be a tiny baby or a well-traveled companion from a rescue centre, your most recent addition will surely become an extremely important part of the family, and one that will bring much joy and happiness.
However, determining your pet’s needs may not be as straightforward as many people think, especially for first time owners.
Before committing and becoming a pet owner, make sure you know their requirements. Just like any important family member, you will want to be able to provide the correct care and support for your pet to ensure they settle in well and become a happy, contented and affectionate companion.
Cats and dogs make excellent companions if they are cared for correctly. However potential pet owners need to be aware that this can be costly and expensive and your new pet will require your time and interest for the rest of their lives.
We have come up with a list of essentials that you should be able to provide to guarantee your pretty new pet remains happy and contented.
Can you…
1. Provide a balanced diet and fresh water - to keep your little scruffs coat shining and their eyes twinkling.
2. Provide companionship - to be able to spend quality time with you, or other pets, for at the very least part of the day.
3. Provide regular worming and flea treatments - to keep your pet happy, comfortable and healthy.
4. Provide recommended vaccinations and injections - to protect your pet from a variety of serious illnesses.
5. Provide a safe place to play and exercise every day - to keep your little rascal entertained and amused and to ensure they are always tired by bedtime!
6. Immediately take your pet to the vets if ill or injured - to make sure your pet is never suffering.
It is also extremely important to consider pet insurance when you bring home your new pet as vet bills can really be crippling to you finances. Our family had to take our kitten to the vets after he suffered an allergic reaction and the blood test alone cost 400GBP. Thankfully our insurance paid the full amount less a 50GBP excess
Cats and dogs are naturally very clean animals and often pride themselves in keeping their coats squeaky clean and their eyes twinkling. However, they do have sharp claws, and if not provided with the correct care and equipment they may be more tempted to dig them into your new furniture!
For more information about your pet’s welfare, get in touch with your local vets who will be more than happy to help.
